4th May Rushmoor Saints Rubies 1 – 1 Beaulieu Sharpays What can I say we had lost Simba (goalkeeper) due to breaking her thumb during training the day before plus we had already secured 2 nd place in the league and Rushmoor had finished champions, so this was a clash of the best two teams in the league. My aim for our final game was for Scoop (Megan) to score her first goal so I pushed her up front and the rest of the team were instructed to get the ball to her and to enjoy themselves. This turned out to one of the most enjoyable games I have watched for a long time which was surprising because we had not played for six weeks. It was as if the girls had never stopped playing. Both set of players highlighted why girls football is now the fastest growing sport in the world it was a joy to watch. Either team could have nicked all the points that is how end to end this game was. For the first half I decided to try one of my tactical changes and played three at the back; two tight midfielders and Scoop up front. I did this to keep the game tight during first and then go for it in the second half. We did, however, take the lead about ten minutes into the game admittedly against the run of play with a well struck goal from Leanne just inside the Rushmoor gaol area. From then on the game became an end to end encounter with both teams having chances and if it wasn't for some good keeping from both keepers we could have had a repeat of our first encounter with Rushmoor which ended in a 4 all draw. At the break we were good for our lead with the girls at the back looking very solid. he second was just as good as the first with both teams going for it. We decided to keep the same formation for the start of the first half because the girls in the middle of the park were enjoying the freedom this formation allowed them. It wasn't long into the second half when Rushmoor got their equaliser. It was one of the best pieces of skill I have seen for a long time. The Rushmoor striker got the ball on the edge of our box with her back to goal swivelled one way went the other and smashed the ball towards our goal. Sophie got her hands to the ball pushing it onto the crossbar. But it came straight down onto her head and she was unable to prevent it from crossing the line. This is how it finished a very enjoyable end to league campaign Better was to come in the afternoon when we took two teams to the Mytchett tournament. We finished the afternoon with both teams in the plate final so we won and finished runners up in the plate competition. I think this was a brilliant achievement because the girls had played their socks of in the morning and most of them were running on empty by the third game. The final was the funniest game I have seen for a while most of the players decided to plaster their faces with face paint and we had at least four or five clowns running round the football pitch (that is the Sharpays for you). Well done girls I'm so proud of every one of you. I'd like to say a massive thank you to Ella A; Twig (Hayley B) and especially Jasmine for stepping in last minute |
