Rusty Raiders nail Scorpions … just!

Match Report 20-April-2008 West Byfleet Scorpions vs Beaulieu Raiders

After a sojourn of six weeks since their last game, The Raiders travelled to a chilly and misty West Byfleet to meet The Scorpions for the second time this season.

Jack was captain of the team of just seven bodies including Charlie in goal, while The Scorpions had a squad of eleven to hand.

The game began with The Raiders dominating and some good passing between Mattie and Lucan. In the 8 th minute Lucan took a long shot at goal; with the ball bouncing awkwardly, The Scorpions goalie was unable to trap it, and it rolled into goal giving The Raiders the lead. From this The Scorpions made continual attacks on The Raiders: notably The Scorpions' No.5 making great advances in getting the ball to The Raiders' goal and at times they were just unlucky in finishing. Any attack from The Raiders was seen off by the defensive skills of The Scorpions female No 22. The fans had to wait until the 24 th minutes for The Raiders next goal: Mattie took the ball down the wing and passed to Peter who navigated the goalie and put the ball in the back of the net. But it wasn't over for the first half: a stunning attack from The Scorpions meant Charlie had to leap and push the ball over the post and the subsequent corner in the 27 th minute allowed The Scorpions to score their first goal, ending the first half (of 28 minutes) 1-2.

Two minutes into the second half and Peter, now in goal, handled the ball outside of his area, giving The Scorpions a free kick; which was well-deflected and cleared by Charlie. In the next ten minutes, The Scorpions continued to show domination with their No.5 and No.25 (a second female) making a menacing pair in attack causing Peter to make some spectacular saves and Timmy, Charlie and Jack to carry out some decisive defensive action. The Raiders were able to make some decent retaliations with Jack having a couple of good shots at goal and Max, Lucan and Mattie making some decent attacks as well. These attacks paid off when, a quarter of an hour into the second half, Lucan shot the ball from the right wing, but the ball appeared to hang for an eternity in the goal mouth before Mattie was able to knock it in, putting The Raiders two goals ahead. By now The Raiders, without any substitutes were tiring, while The Scorpions were able to continue to swap their team around using their subs. The foreboding duo of The Scorpions' No.5 and No.25 continued to put the pressure on, which paid off with their second goal. The last five minutes of this 30 minute half saw some jaw-dropping, heart-stopping play from both sides, where both teams made great chances to score more goals, but after an hour of play the match ended with The Raiders winning 2-3.

All of the boys were awarded man-of-the-match for a well-deserved win.
