Beaulieu Football Club

Veterans

Having watched the team train, it is clear that all players must have been in football teams when they were younger. They may not have the speed and agility of youth, but they most certainly still have the skill. Although... I am undecided whether they are working off the frustrations of modern day life, just trying to get fit or trying to practice what they preach? Maybe they're trying to return to their former glory!  Whatever it is - I can't seem to get them off the pitch at the end of the training session.

The vets team play purely for fun, we aren't interested in any cups or joining a league. Most of the team are involved in youth football either as managers/coaches or parents, therefore we only play approx once a month. We do however have a kick-a-bout every Thursday evening at Wellington college on the ATP between 8-9pm. Interested in joining or arranging a game? Contact me via the contacts page.

On a frozen pitch, Beaulieu were out warming up before Shalford were in the club house! Beaulieu were a big team and the direct, aerial approch was clearly their best method of playing with a commanding midfield aerial assalt. However, Shalford took the lead from a fine Tidy lob, which deceived their Scotish goal keeper bouncing over his head for Burrows to bundle in the net.
Gareth's big kicking was being returned with interest as Beaulieu battled forward. They scored when their striker ,who was clearly 5 yards off side, scored with aplomb, unfortunately the linesman wasn't looking at the time (their lino!). They shaded the first half, with Tidy and Burrows going close, but their keeper made 2 fine stops. Unfortunately a sleepy 2 minutes before half time let Beaulieu score from a free kick, very poor marking.
A stern half time team talk from Sheppy, inspired a much improved second half from Shalford, who dominated. Burrows ran their players inside out and had them on the back foot allowing more pressing in their third. Wiggie dropped short to collect from Gareth and the ball was always played to feet in some excellent possession and buil up play.
A fine crosss from Burrows was cleanly volleyed on target br Rich, beating the keeper, but not the defender's out stretched hand. A red card offence, but the ref showed leaniency, the player stayed. Wiggie stepped up - the Scotish keeper saved well down low to his left. Beaulieu, then wacked the ball long and 1-2 became 1-3, bummer.
Shalford continued to press, Chuff was one on one, clean through and the keeper made another fine save. Burrows tried his shooting skills on several occasions, luckily we didn't lose any balls.
The pressure led to a defensive error and their keeper skidding out past the ball to allow Simmy to pull a goal back with 5 minutes to go. Although open to the counter attack, Shalford pushed up, passed well and there was some great exchanges. Simmy almost made it 3 chipping the keeper who made himself big and the ball grazed the top of the bar.
Well done to Kenny for reffing and having a run out to put Simmo out of his misery. Man of the match was awarded to Sheppy. Personally, given our full backs are in their fifties and we had no subs (they had 4)it was an excellent effort by all. Well done.

And now for the truth!!

Beaulieu started their pre match preparations very professionally by getting adapted to the somewhat difficult conditions and poor state of pitch and this served them well, for when the Shalford team eventually showed up ,from the warmth of the dressing room they were in until right on KO time !! Shalford were put to the sword with complete domination of the game by Beaulieu`s energetic approach , Shalford probably wished they had stayed in their dressing room as Beaulieu battered them with wave after wave of attacks ,Mark was dominant in centre midfield controlling any threat with probing runs down both flanks from Gavin & Cameron always keeping their defence busy and their midfield ineffective the new defensive partnership of Rich ,Bash, Neil & Craig they dealt with any rare attack efficiently it was not a case of if , but when, we would score.

However , completely against the run of play our Scottish keeper was obviously rusty (or just the fact he is Scottish) missed the ball and we went 1-0 down - howler.

This spurred on Beaulieu and the lively Kevin North then scored to get a much deserved equaliser , easily beating the offside trap ( from OUR supplied Lino who had an excellent half bearing in mind Shalford didn't see the need to supply one of their own!! ) .

Still Beaulieu kept coming and with the Shalford defence in disarray again , a long free kick from Gavin was headed back across goal by Mark and there was Cameron who athetically (for him anyway) threw himself at the ball to get the lead Beaulieu so richly deserved. The first half closed out at 2-1 to Beaulieu but Shalford could not have complained if it had been 5 - 1 !!

Second half and with Beaulieu using their 4 subs started the 2nd half as they finished the first in the ascendancy, but with a completely different back four (with the exception of Bash who was having a fine game ) , the team needed to adjust with the new personnel ,so, with Shalford having to step up their game from their poor first half showing the game became more even & Shalford got a penalty which our scottish keeper magnificently saved (was that really you Gerry ?? ),

With 10 mins left we lost Cameron & Bash to injuries & A couple of heavy challenges which went unpunished by a somewhat lenient ref meant Beaulieu had to change their shape and Shalford now playing 3 up front started to attack more often ,however our Scottish keeper was troubled only occasionally and Kevin North capped a good performance by scoring our third goal

As the game wore on our scottish keeper did a classic Gerry trick by fooling the forwards (and himself) by dummying the ball which allowed the surprsied Shalford forward to get their second and this gave Shalford hope that they could salvage an undeserved draw but Beaulieus determind performance was rewarded with a fully deserved win .

Overall a good performance and we just need to learn to adjust to the changes we inevitably have to make now our squad has got stronger and we have more players avaialable - any way we continued our winning streak….
